Resolution 1998-1999-1 Compliance with SACS criteria

Whereas, UCF now offers study abroad programs as well as semester and academic year exchange programs for direct UCF credit, and

Whereas, faculty who teach courses for SUS credit must meet SACS accreditation standards, and

Whereas, it is the university’s responsibility to assure future compliance with SACS accreditation standards,

Be It Resolved that continued compliance with SACS accreditation standards for Study Abroad Programs and Student Exchange Abroad Programs for direct UCF credit be assured by mechanisms approved by the Provost.

Future compliance will be monitored by and may include the attached.

Attachment to Resolution 1998-1999-1

  1. All Departments and academic units involved in Study Abroad are to be reminded by the OIS (Office of International Studies), that it is their responsibility to assure compliance with SACS criteria of all faculty who teach for direct UCF credit.
  2. Conditions for SACS compliance are to be included by the Office of International Studies in all new Study Abroad and Student Exchange Abroad agreements that involve instruction by faculty from the host institution.
  3. As Study Abroad and Student Exchange Abroad agreements that involve instruction by faculty from the host institution come up for periodic renewal, rules of SACS compliance are to be attached to the agreements by OIS.
  4. Memos about updated SACS criteria shall be sent to all partnership institutions with which UCF currently has Study Abroad or Student Exchange Abroad agreements that involve instruction by faculty from the host institution. This process shall begin during Spring, 1999 and continued as needed.

Resolution 1998-1999-2 Faculty Parking
(Not Approved)

Whereas, The University has now opened the second parking garage, effectively relieving parking congestion, and

Whereas, Faculty parking lots have been so designated to contribute to the smooth functioning of the University, and

Whereas, Faculty are charged more for parking permits than students, and

Whereas, Courses offered in the evenings and faculty lots are now open to students after 5:30 p.m., and  

Whereas, Regular faculty and adjuncts who teach evening courses beginning after 5:30 p.m. are unable to find parking spaces in the faculty lots, and

Whereas, Faculty parking lots were previously closed to students until 7:00 p.m.

Therefore Be It Resolved that faculty lots not be open for student parking Monday through Thursday until after 7:00 p.m.

“As we discussed, it is inappropriate for me to approve the Faculty Senate Resolution 1998-1992-2 because this is an issue that should be discussed with the University Parking Committee. I am glad that this discussion has occurred and that the Parking Committee has agreed to implement the Faculty Senate Resolution, at least in part.”

Resolution 1998-1999-3 Baccalaureate requirement of regular instruction by UCF faculty

Whereas, the university offers qualified juniors and seniors semester and academic year exchanges abroad as well as a National Student Exchange Program for direct UCF credits, and

Whereas, the former requirement for 60 hours of senior institution credits has recently been diminished, and

Whereas, it is in the interest of the university to safeguard a minimum requirement for residence credit,

Be It Resolved that 25% of a baccalaureate degree requirement be met by courses taught by UCF faculty.

Resolution 1998-1999-4 Study Abroad or National Student Exchange Course work

Whereas, UCF values the exposure of its students to international and diversity issues, and

Whereas, UCF offers Study Abroad and National Student Exchange opportunities to qualified students, and

Whereas, such official UCF study programs, which are sanctioned and sponsored by the academic departments involved, imply direct UCF credit and UCF tuition,

Be It Resolved that the credit for course work done by UCF students during an official and departmentally sanctioned Study Abroad or National Student Exchange program will count as direct UCF credit.

Resolution 1998-1999-5 Baccalaureate Honors

Whereas, the current system of determining Baccalaureate Honors based on the grade point average earned in the semesters that comprise the last 48 UCF hours has proven impractical due to the large number of 4.0 grade point averages produced in most UCF colleges, and

Whereas, Baccalaureate Honors should reflect a student’s entire academic record, and

Whereas, the University values the conference of Baccalaureate Honors,

Be It Resolved that UCF return to its previous policy of conferring Baccalaureate Honors on those students who have completed a minimum of 48 UCF credit hours and who are in the upper 10% of the graduating class of their college as determined by overall grade point average (as described in the 1997-98 Undergraduate Catalog – p. 69).

Resolution 1998-1999-6 Term Limits for State-Funded Assistantship

Whereas, graduate assistantship funded using state monies are limited and scarce, and

Whereas, some graduate assistants have been supported on these funds for long periods, and

Whereas, these funds are best used to support students for a reasonable period of time while working towards a degree, and

Whereas, these funds are then best used to recruit highly qualified new graduate students

Be It Resolved that the Senate supports the concept of term limits for State funded graduate student assistantships.

Resolution 1998-1999-7 Unlawful Discrimination Policies and Procedures

Whereas, the Faculty Senate recognizes the issues of unlawful discrimination based on gender, race, religion, national origin, marital or veteran status, and disability is complex and stems from legal and case history, and

Whereas, the university community would like guidance on these matters, and

Whereas, the state, the university and faculty can incur liability if unlawful discrimination complaints are not dealt with in a timely and appropriate manner,

Be It Resolved that an articulation of guidelines be provided to the University of Central Florida community that describes and defines unlawful discrimination based on gender, race, religion, national origin marital or veteran status, and disability, and

Be It Further Resolved that guidelines be provided to University of Central Florida community for the investigation and resolution of such actions.
